Project Title: From Exclusion to Inclusion: Supporting Students in Alternative Settings

Submission: Professional Certificate in Digital Learning and Instructional Design

Institute: Digital Learning Institute

Instructional Design Framework: ADDIE

Overview

This project is a detailed demonstration of instructional design skills developed as part of the Professional Certificate in E-Learning and Instructional Design through Digital Learning Institute. The course concept focuses on equipping educators with strategies to support students in alternative settings due to disciplinary actions, emphasizing inclusivity and improved outcomes for marginalized students. Although not slated for immediate implementation, this case study presents a comprehensive framework for a potential e-learning course, incorporating best practices and scalable design.

Scope

Many educators are asked to support students in alternative education programs without receiving the training, resources, or tools to do so effectively. This project responds to that gap by designing a course that equips teachers with practical strategies, adaptable to local district policies and contexts.

Through analysis, I identified the business problem: inconsistent expectations, rising DAEP placements, and a lack of scalable training. My solution was a modular, district-adaptable course that blended empathy, accessibility, and practical design—helping teachers provide consistent support while managing their regular classrooms.

The course prototype demonstrates my use of ADDIE, Backward Design, and the 4C/ID model to build a learning experience that is scalable, user-centered, and impact-driven. Features include:

  • Branching scenarios for practicing decision-making

  • Interactive simulations and screencasts for hands-on skill building

  • Personalized learning paths through pre-assessment

  • Accessibility-first design aligned with UDL principles

  • Evaluation plan using Kirkpatrick’s Model and xAPI data to measure impact

This case study shows my ability to translate a real-world gap into a sustainable, scalable learning solution—one designed to meet human needs while driving measurable results.
